Math and the Middle School Dance : Digitizing Instructional Routines to Maximize Entrepreneurial Thinking

Description

Dan Johnson calls Math and the Middle School Dance his "so what" book. After publishing numerous books and articles on temperament, critical thinking, mathematics, and educational change; Dr. Johnson asks educators in grades 5-9 to join him in answering the question, "So what do those Common Core standards look like in the classroom?" In Math and the Middle School Dance Dr. Johnson describes how students think, how they can improve their thinking, and how they can develop entrepreneurial thinking skills for the 21st Century global marketplace. He explains how teachers and principals can use digital technology to transform instruction from a logical-sequential march into a dance in the spaces between the notes. He describes this shift in how we think about teaching and learning as a necessary first step toward transforming schools into centers of entrepreneurial thinking.

Mario O. D'Souza: A Catholic Philosophy of Education : The Church and Two Philosophers

A Catholic Philosophy of Education : The Church and Two Philosophers

Description

Today's pluralist and multicultural society raises questions about how to teach religiously and ethnically diverse students in Catholic schools. A Catholic Philosophy of Education addresses these challenges by examining the documents from the Roman Congregation for Catholic Education alongside the writings of Jacques Maritain and Bernard Lonergan. Mario D'Souza proposes a contemporary formulation for a Catholic philosophy of education in which the ideals of Catholicism form the basis for the mission of the Catholic school. Drawing on the Church's educational documents, and informed by Maritain and Lonergan, D'Souza explains how the unifying anthropology of Catholic education enables Catholic schools to serve amidst diversity by avoiding the extremes of religious exclusivism and fundamentalism, on the one hand, and relativism and individualism, on the other. He explores the aims of Catholic schools in relation to students, teachers, and society, and the relationship between goodness, discipline, and knowledge. He argues that students must be educated for personal and communal freedom and authenticity, and to strive for the common good, suggesting how a Catholic philosophy of education can provide the framework for such personal and communal transformation. Essential reading for new and experienced Catholic educators, A Catholic Philosophy of Education demonstrates that Maritain and Lonergan have much to offer in service of an education that is liberating, instructive, illuminating, and integrative.

Anke Bernau: Virgins : A Cultural History

Virgins : A Cultural History

Description

In the Middle Ages it was believed that only a virgin could charm a unicorn out of hiding, but far from being a quaint, anachronistic concept, virginity remains a central value in western culture. Type 'virgin' into Google and you instantly get over 400,000 hits: everything from the Anti-Nicene Fathers to advertisements for 'Free Teen Virgin Pussy'. This book asks why virginity has remained so important in western civilization, and looks at the changing roles of virginity over the last 800 years, drawing on a wide range of examples from medieval saints to contemporary vampire-slayers.Anke Bernau examines the Medical Virgin - what exactly is virginity, and how can you reliably identify one?; the Religious Virgin - from the Madonna to the American Christian Right's insistence on sexual abstinence before marriage; the Popular Virgin of Gothic fiction and modern day horror films; the Political Virgin - virginity's intimate connection with money and power; and the Monstrous Virgin, as embodiment of what is ultimately unknowable, and of violence, excess and death. This is a lively and wide-ranging examination of a phenomenon that has touched many aspects of our culture.

Welcome to Orphancorp

Description

Winner of the 2015 Seizure Viva La Novella Prize 'Takes all of your dystopian nightmares and connects them to a mother lode of pure emotional intensity. There's so much keen detail here about the cruel logic of oppressive institutions, you'll feel Mirii's yearning for freedom in your bones - and you'll rejoice at every tiny moment of escape that she achieves. Welcome to Orphancorp is harrowing, scarily real, and ultimately super moving.' - Charlie Jane Anders (i09) 'Punchy, crunchy, sexy and smart, Welcome to Orphancorp is a short, sharp shock of a story with bruised-but-not-broken characters and a bonsai dystopia you can actually believe in. Marlee Jane Ward is a writer of heart and passion, muscle and slow-burning anger.' - Ian McDonald 'Welcome to Orphancorp is an intimate, heartfelt story set in the darkest of places. I can't stop thinking about these characters.' - Kij Johnson 'An object lesson in how to dehumanise young people by locking them up and depriving them of all warmth and care - has never been more timely. This gritty, greasy story is peppered with violence and lit with the slenderest shafts of affection and hope. It will make your jaw clench with fear for the indomitable Mirii Mahoney, and your fist punch the air at her every tiny victory.' - Margo Lanagan Winner of the Victorian Premier's Literary Awards for Young Adult.

Landscaping Solutions for Small Spaces: 10 Smart Plans for Designing and Planting Small Gardens

Description

Small yards often pose large problems for home gardeners.Adding too many plants and other elements leads to a crowded, chaotic look, but it is also easy to plan for too few plants, which can make even a small space seem sparse and under planted. "10 Garden Solutions for Small Spaces" provides detailed designs for common garden situations. Each design features both "hardscaping" and landscaping ideas, including detailed plans that show the number and types of plants for each design. Plant recommendations cover all hardiness zones. Some designs address problems with the site, such as a small front yard or a sloping yard; others deal with requirements imposed by the gardener, such as garden that requires a minimal amount of maintenance or one that will be enjoyed mainly at night. In addition to the designs themselves, a building techniques section helps turn the plans into reality."

This book is about empowerment. It is about fulfilling your needs, dreams, and aspirations without being trapped by feelings that society has taught you to ignore. Onora O'Neill: Autonomy and Trust in Bioethics

Autonomy and Trust in Bioethics

Description

Why has autonomy been a leading idea in philosophical writing on bioethics, and why has trust been marginal? In this important book, Onora O'Neill suggests that the conceptions of individual autonomy so widely relied on in bioethics are philosophically and ethically inadequate, and that they undermine rather than support relations of trust. She shows how Kant's non-individualistic view of autonomy provides a stronger basis for an approach to medicine, science and biotechnology, and does not marginalize untrustworthiness, while also explaining why trustworthy individuals and institutions are often undeservingly mistrusted. Her arguments are illustrated with issues raised by practices such as the use of genetic information by the police or insurers, research using human tissues, uses of new reproductive technologies, and media practices for reporting on medicine, science and technology. Autonomy and Trust in Bioethics will appeal to a wide range of readers in ethics, bioethics and related disciplines.
